Acrylic on cotton canvas, 66 X 84 inches, 2014
The concept for The Three Graces: Mutation, Variation and Adaptation, was developed by the Satyrus Group in 2000 as part of the three canvas series of three figure compositions that includes Logos: The Satyr‘s Transcendental Dance in the Labyrinth of the Spirit (Satyr’s Dance) and Digging for the Truth in the Reality of the Physical World. The concept was the idea of Leo Bratenas following a discussion among the group on the general theme from a poetic perspective. The image was developed but never fully completed and was left in that state until I began working again on it in the spring of 2014. Changes made at this time include a reworking of the general tones and details of the background, the addition of some animals (raven, toad, caterpillar, snail and butterfly), and a reworking of the foreground and figures, particularly the hands and feet. The imagery reflects a spiritual appreciation of the harmonies of nature through its reproductive and evolutionary mechanisms. This painting was completed on August 7, 2014.
